Separate Consumption from the Price Charged

A bill contains more than an energy total.

Understand the distinction

An energy quantity and a monetary charge describe different things. Rates, fixed charges, taxes and billing periods can affect the amount payable. Their arrangement depends on the actual supplier and applicable jurisdiction, so another household’s total is not a universal comparison.

Put it in your home notes

Use the definitions on your own bill and keep personal account details private. Record the consumption period separately from the payment date. This article offers a reading method rather than current tariff advice or an estimate of what any change will save.
